Bhuta Yadnya Ceremony at Besakih Temple

Bhuta Yadnya is a type of purification ritual meant to cleanse or neutralise both physical and non-physical areas from the negative effects of the non physical spaces such as the bhutakalas which are the spirits considered to be of a lower nature than mankind.

There are many types of ceremonies that require the bhuta yadnya purification ritual. On 9th April 2009, an important ceremony known as Panca Walikrama will be held at Bali’s Besakih Temple, also known as the Mother Temple. Such as ceremony is held only once every 10 years and is held to ensure the wellbeing of the people.

About Besakih Temple
Besakih Temple is located on the hills of Mount Agung in East Bali. Within this massive temple complex are five distinct temple compounds housing 19 temples which are sprawled across the mountain slopes. The main temple is Pura Penataran Agung and is dedicated to the god Siwa. Another two temples are dedicated to Brahma and Vishnu.
