Preparations for Galungan Day

- Bali Holidays, ceremonies, galungan
Galungan Day falls on Wednesday, 18 March 2009. However, activities start well before then and all Balinese Hindus have already begun to buy the necessary things for the ceremony. The main purpose is to prepare all the items for making the offerings. This might sound simple but making offerings is by no means a small job once you see how elaborate and large these offerings can get. The penjors that you will see lining the streets in front of every Balinese home, are elaborate in construction and require a great deal of time to weave.

Sugarcane is used as part of an offering.
Everything is done in an organised and methodical way in order that on Galungan day itself, all the offerings are completed and locals can carry out their rituals at the temples .
A typical morning would start with an early rise at about 5.00am to go to the traditional market for the purpose of buying items such as yellow coconut leaves, bamboo and food items such as garlic, onion and ginger to make satay as an offering. On another morning, this continues with purchases of cake for offerings and other items. Each day, more items are purchased in preparation for Galungan Day. There is alot of activity in the markets in the early morning and vendors increase their prices more than a week in advance to profit from the sales.
