Class Structure
For convenience and accessibility, the entire curriculum has been divided up into 2.5 hour modules.
Each course module is made up of three basic elements - theory, practice and environmental
awareness. Each element is applied in timed exercises focused on optimizing the learning experience,
e.g.: 15 minutes of theory, 20 minutes of practical application, 5 minute drink break combined with
environmental awareness discussion.
Policy
When a student is unable to complete a course to our required level, then the course is repeated by
the student. Allowing a student to progress who is unable to complete required skills would hinder
their ability to confidently continue with higher level courses. This in evokes a sense of trust and
reliability.
Introductory / Intermediate
Courses 1, 2 and 3, these three initial classes cover the key basic skills and surf safety: board
handling, the jump up, paddling and directional turns (forehand and backhand). The environmental
issues covered include reading surf and weather conditions, tidal effect on surf and wave mechanics
(origin, types, patterns, directions and intensity).
Advanced
Courses 4, 5 and 6 cover transitional turns, generating speed and body positioning. The
environmental issues focus on reading, board positioning and using waves, surfing rules and
etiquette. The classes are key preparation for reef and large wave riding.
Reef
Courses 7, 8, 9 and 10 take place on a reef break. Course 7 is a reef adaptation course where the
student familiarizes with the new surroundings and builds confidence on the reef; main focus is the
geography and make up of a reef. Courses 8, 9 and 10 use wave size and power to develop top and
bottom turns and cut backs.
Surf Development
Courses 11, 12 and 13 will focus on board selection and wave assessment. 11 can be taught on the
beach break or in a swimming pool to give a more controlled environment for learning the duck dive.
A range of epoxy boards from 6’0 to 9’2 are available for our students to ride before purchasing.
Course 12 focuses on assessing reef breaks: entry points, paddle out channels, safety and rest areas,
take off points, pullouts and exit strategies. 13 is a take off course front and back hand building.
Environment issues cover surf confidence, hold under skills and board rescues.
Surf Expression
The final four classes of our standard curriculum cover surfing maneuvers; round house, re-enters
and floaters. Through video demonstrations and coaching we break down each maneuver into four
simple skills and then link them to complete the full maneuver. This technique was developed for
competition surf coaching and is taught to competition accuracy. Environmental issues cover surf
fitness, mental preparation and breath retention.
Tow–in
Courses 17 and 18 are the icing on the cake. The two day course covers all aspect of tow-in and big
wave surfing without the big waves. Equipment, rules, rescues, condition assessments, tow–in
procedures and wave riding. Environmental issues cover; PWC (wave runner) usage rules, tow–in
etiquette and environmental impact issues.
